Only an enemy soldier could save her life–and her heart.

Highlander Callum MacDonell battled lowland Covenanters at the service of the King. Now charged with hunting an assassin, his journey will lead to a murderer’s passionate Covenanter sister, Mari McEwan.

Betrayed and abandoned by the man she loved, Mari faces judgment by a tribunal of her people demanding she name the father of her unborn child, or be exiled from her beloved home and family. As she stands trembling before her community, she knows she must refuse. And yet, if she does so, a cruel fate awaits her.

“Excellent read… This author is a story teller who has ground the story in history. She weaves a tale that is intriguing and has many twists and turns. Some of the questions the characters ask are relevant today. This author is worth noting.”

“Excellenty researched and written. This fictional story of Scottish History is well researched and written. Author's notes at the end give research notes!! The characters of the story are well-developed and grow over time. Relationships once strained are cemented. Great questions about war in general are put forth and debated among the "enemy"! Faith and family loyalty is also debated. The story line is fascinating and full of energy and drama. Tears flow over love and choices lost. You WILL want to read this book again. I will be reading book 2 in the series!”

"Exciting and Captivating. This is the first book I have read by J.L. Jarvis and I was more than thoroughly impressed. The story was exciting, the characters entertaining and the romance sweet and endearing. Callum was a wonderful hero and I absolutely adored him and Mari was a strong heroine. Their chemistry could be felt from their very first meeting. The secondary characters of Alex, Duncan, Charlie and Hughie added a fun touch to the story and I enjoyed their friendly banter as it was at times humorous and very much the way it would be between true friends. There is no doubt that I will want to read the rest of the books in this series. For those who are offended by graphic love scenes, the love scenes between Callum and Mari were tastefully done, not overly descriptive. This was a wonderful story and one I highly recommend to any who love Highland historical romances.”

“I felt that this novel contained all the elements of a truly memorable book. First of all, the setting, 17th century Scotland, was described in such detail, that this reader could really imagine the highlands, the small towns, the larger towns and sailing on a sinking ship. The main characters too, were given such true human qualities-loyalty, compassion and devotion- that made this novel so enjoyable to read. The conflicts, the adventures all endured by the characters made this an unforgettable novel. Thanks to the author for creating such memorable, adventurous characters!!”

“Great read!! Wow, what a fantastic read!! My first book I've ready by this author. So much unhappiness and sorrow but through it all the clan kept it together and pushed through. Great plot because I never knew how it would unweave itself which kept me reading, almost like a mystery. I will read more from this author as she is good at keeping my interest!”

“An unlikely love was born between a King's Highlander and Covenanter. I really loved this story. A bit of the Scarlet Letter and religious oppression. I loved that it was based on history bringing the period alive. Both sides were adequately presented passionately.”
